Publication types

It is important to select a suitable publication type for communicating your research, so consider which is the most appropriate forum. Depending on your discipline, the following publishing types may be suitable for your research:

  • Articles in peer-reviewed journals are generally well regarded in all subject areas, and are often the most prominent method for communicating research
  • Books and book chapters are considered favourably for researchers in social sciences, humanities, art, design, media and communications
  • Conference papers are often the most widely valued in computer science
  • Other media might be appropriate for writing about your research. For example, an article in The Conversation or a post on a relevant blog could provide excellent forums for reaching a wider audience.

You may find that each of these publication types are appropriate for particular purpose. For example, speaking at a conference to deliver a paper can present a forum for communicating your ideas and – depending on feedback you receive – can be step towards publishing a peer-reviewed journal article.

For more information on publishing in books, conferences and other forums, see the Strategic Publishing Library guide for advice on publishing in books and conferences.

The remainder of this module will focus on steps for identifying relevant, quality journals to publish with.
